Microsoft not only killed the PC; it did so by killing not only what you could do with a PC, but the best ways to write the software by which you would do so.

All this writing was on the wall in the very way Microsoft has always conducted "business." Microsoft intentionally *tricked us* into involuntarily purchasing new products, merely to keep (unnecessarily) abreast of revised proprietary file formats. In no more than the hollow name of innovation, Microsoft purposely hid menus and tools from adept users — not only making us inept, but making it inept to *re*-master what was no more than a ruse, intended to perpetuate our dispossession.

No one has counted the careers and lives which were ruined by MS "business strategies" — broken promises; destroyed competitors; bogus, dysfunctional products — all of which was the only real idea(s) Microsoft had not to prosper by benefiting us, but instead by compelling us to perpetually re-purchase what never intended to best serve us in the first place. The best features were immediately stripped from purchased competitors, only to keep us in a Microsoft rut forever. I speak too, unfortunately, from too much experience. We don't call them "Microshaft" for nothing.

The only thing I applaud Steve Ballmer for is himself contributing to the slaying of the ugly, nasty, vile beast, because in his own limitations, he can neither recognize nor give any better. We have to applaud the demise of Microsoft, because Microsoft gave us no other option, if we *ever* hoped for anything good out of free enterprise, free markets, and our own efforts to succeed in (or despite?) them.

No, Apple doesn't listen... or really intend to serve its customer base any longer, either. Which is rather preposterous, for a company which refuses even to provide a tree control to negotiate its file system — or for a company more bent on hiding the file system from any reasonably skilled user who might depend instead upon reasonable means of negotiation.

But good-bye and good riddance to every such company. One day when we return to free enterprise and markets, the artificial leverage of the brand of people who would do these things in the name of innovation... will disappear forever. And the benefit of that?

*Better* companies will prosper *instead* *by serving us*. <iframe src="http://rcm.amazon.com/e/cm?t=icr0c-20&o=1&p=8&l=as1&asins=B008NA3HZY&ref=tf_til&fc1=000000&IS2=1<1=_blank&m=amazon&lc1=0000FF&bc1=000000&bg1=FFFFFF&npa=1&f=ifr" style="width:120px;height:240px;" scrolling="no" marginwidth="0" marginheight="0" frameborder="0">

A world without desktop PC/Mac would be a world without content.

We need some machines to create the applications with. But it would appear that the fear of being left behind in the mobile markets has left us with a schizophrenic OS (windows 8), which leaves existing desktop users annoyed/less productive because of the extra UI obstacles.

If the desktop PC market keeps shrinking, it would mean software development costs rise in order to cover the hardware and developer tool costs. Simply because there is no more economy of scale in the desktop space.

No more *free* apps <iframe src="http://rcm.amazon.com/e/cm?t=icr0c-20&o=1&p=8&l=as1&asins=B008NA3HZY&ref=tf_til&fc1=000000&IS2=1<1=_blank&m=amazon&lc1=0000FF&bc1=000000&bg1=FFFFFF&npa=1&f=ifr" style="width:120px;height:240px;" scrolling="no" marginwidth="0" marginheight="0" frameborder="0">

It's still easier to carry a spare battery than "spare" devices. For example, when the thing you want is on the other device. We're being sold the phone/pad/computer (and even music player) concept by all the manufacturers (like Microsoft and Apple) as a way to get us to spend more money on devices, their software, internet access, and cloud services to sync them. (Of course, for many people, the fear of losing their only device may keep them tied to the cloud or another device as a security blanket.) <iframe src="http://rcm.amazon.com/e/cm?t=icr0c-20&o=1&p=8&l=as1&asins=B008NA3HZY&ref=tf_til&fc1=000000&IS2=1<1=_blank&m=amazon&lc1=0000FF&bc1=000000&bg1=FFFFFF&npa=1&f=ifr" style="width:120px;height:240px;" scrolling="no" marginwidth="0" marginheight="0" frameborder="0">

In the end, all in one devices have one flaw...after you use it solid for hours on the plane/patio/coffee hous the battery dies out. No more phone calls, movies, music, games, apps or anything else till you recharge it. Now you have to go to your PC and use that till your wonderful phone/pad/notebook recharges. You could carry an extra brick battery pack to keep using, but then you are no longer mobile with just you and your device, you have to lug around a back pack.
Hey Bob, try editing a 2-hour 1080p HD video on an iPad and then storing the files in the cloud. Ain't gonna happen. In fact ain't gonna happen anytime soon. PCs are not going away. Certain tasks require a desktop. For home and personal users, yes, they may go away.
