If you took out all the expensive technology, textbooks, and other mindless crap that modern education has instilled in the classroom room and replaced that with real books, I am talking about a legitmate literture-based curriculum, then kids might be able to read chapter books before 4th grade. There is plenty of technology at home and in the society as a whole.

This is a complex issue and a proper balance is obviously needed, but it would be foolish to "throw the baby out with the bath water."
