I’m sorry to hear that, having read about your attachment to him and having been in the same situation myself before. One of the wonderful things about pets is that they celebrate life and never fear death – in this they are a model for our lives.

  7. Joe Dokes says:

Many commentators often wonder why dogs get more sympathy than people. For example, a blind man and his seeing eye dog get hit by a car. The dog will get more get-well-soon cards than the man.

I think it is because dogs give us the type of loyalty and unconditional love that humans can only aspire to. You were loyal and faithful to your dog until the end, for that you are a better person.

Gilmore will always occupy a special place in your heart, I feel for your loss.

    Regards,

    Joe Dokes

I’m sorry to hear it Bob. It says a lot about the character of a man to read how you slept with and cared for him like you did as well as your sublimely succinct comment on it being hard to be with Gwen when she needed someone most. I’m glad there are people like you in the world – I’m fairly certain Gilmore and Gwen were glad too.

I read your blog for your reputation in technology and expertise in journalism but those few posts about Gilmore and Gwen are humbling in their humanity. Thank you.

  62. Mark says:

    Wheuuuw ……

Tough day for you, I know.
God, I love my little buddies, and hate to see them go.

    Unknown author, great story :

Being a veterinarian, I had been called to examine a ten-year-old Irish Wolfhound named Belker. The dog’s owners, Ron, his wife Lisa, and their little boy Shane, were all very attached to Belker, and they were hoping for a miracle.

I examined Belker and found he was dying of cancer. I told the family we couldn’t do anything for Belker, and offered to perform the euthanasia procedure for the old dog in their home.

As we made arrangements, Ron and Lisa told me they thought it would be good for six-year-old Shane to observe the procedure. They felt as though Shane might learn something from the experience.

The next day, I felt the familiar catch in my throat as Belker ‘s family surrounded him. Shane seemed so calm, petting the old dog for the last time, that I wondered if he understood what was going on. Within a few minutes, Belker slipped peacefully away.

The little boy seemed to accept Belker’s transition without any difficulty or confusion. We sat together for a while after Belker’s Death, wondering aloud about the sad fact that animal lives are shorter than human lives.
Shane, who had been listening quietly, piped up, ”I know why.”

Startled, we all turned to him. What came out of his mouth next stunned me. I’d never heard a more comforting explanation. It has changed the way I try and live.

He said,”People are born so that they can learn how to live a good life — like loving everybody all the time and being nice, right?” The Six-year-old continued,

”Well, dogs already know how to do that, so they don’t have to stay as long.”

  63. Joel says:

Come old girl and walk with me
    One more time together.

Foreign smells and stuff all out of place.
I’ll be your eyes, I’ll hold your head.
But I wish I could avert my face.

I’ll stroke your muzzle, try to calm your fears.
I know it hurts, but not much longer.
Sorry if my voice is gruff, I think it’s from the tears.

    With shrouded form and shovel…
Come old girl and walk with me
    One more time alone.

My folks have been through this same very difficult situation with 3 dogs. I really don’t know how they coped. They each gave such love, joy, & companionship. That’s what they say to this day that it’s all that joy, love, etc. They had a Sheltie, Skipperkie, and a retied show dog(Sheltie).. So remember all those happy times you’ve had, it will help in time, really it does….

I send my condolences. In these dark days remember you and
your family gave Gilmore the best and happiest days of his life.

  77. Dave says:

    Condolences, Bob and family.

There is nothing like a dog. Nothing.

The 2 dogs we’ve had over the last 20 years – a Border Collie and a German Shepherd – were practically doing differential equations, they were so smart. And they were absolutely members of the family.

The only downside to a pet – particularly a dog – is that it’s so hard to say goodbye.

Thank you for giving Gilmore such a good home – every dog deserves such a chance – and bless you for giving him your time and your company down the homestretch.

  78. Mike Saint Louis says:

Sorry to hear that Bob. I’ve been through this myself.

  79. Condolences. I know I’m repeating what others have said, but I hope you can take comfort in the time you had with him and the life you were able to give him.

Gone for just a while. You’ll meet up with him again at Rainbow Bridge and cross together as a pack to Heaven’s Gate with all the other canines from your mortal existence.

Mourn your loss, but celebrate him. He’s in a better place, one that’s pleasant and with infinite number of yummies and chewies to keep him busy until the leader of the pack arrives.

    Our condolences.

  89. Keith W says:

Thank you for sharing Gilmore’s story Bob. It’s moving how open you are with sharing about your personal life. I feel like you’re a friend, and we’ve never so much as exchanged words.

I hope these words and the many other caring responses help to ease your pain just a bit.

  100. Fred Brockman says:

Man it’s hard. I’ve buried in their old ages a brilliant border collie found abandoned as a runt in a dumpster and the three cats he herded, including an orange tiger that could give dogs lessons on unconditional love. Tears running down my face every time. No clue how the hereafter really works, but it sure would be good to see everyone again. Wishing you and yours peace, love and comfort.

  105. l.a.guy says:

I’m embarrassed to admit it, but I had five relatives pass away in the space of three years, including one whose hand I held as their pulse drifted away in an ICU room, and none of them hurt the way losing a pet does.

    • kr says:

I know exactly what you mean, LA guy.

Condolences, Bob. Truly sad to see this. You’re to be commended for not only your writing but also the patience you showed for Gilmore in his final days.

  109. Griff says:

    Hi Bob,

I am SO very sorry to hear about Gilmore. I am very sure you and your family gave him a loving, happy and fulfilled life that you can all look back on with affection.

This year, my wife and I have lost a few of our dear companions – we call all our animals our ‘kids’ – and what others on this list is so true – in some ways is does hurt and one feels the loss even more than close relatives.

Animals do not lie, cheat, steal, hurt or backbite. Their love and affection is truly unconditional, and is a lesson to all humankind.

My heartfelt condolences to you and your family,

    Regards,

    Griff

  110. Doug G. says:

Bob, I offer my heartfelt condolences to you and yours on the loss of Gilmore. I’ve lost my own two cats in the space of the last half year, so I have some inkling as to what you’re going through. In a world where our animals are not always treated with the love and care they deserve, when they are treated well, it is noted somewhere to your credit, and Gilmore’s brethren know that you cared for one of theirs, and support you through your loss.

  111. Sincere condolences. RIP Gilmore.

  112. joe blow says:

My sympathies to you and your family. Losing a good dog is painful. Remember the good times with him.

  113. Bob,

So sorry for your loss. Good for you for putting in the time at the end. Gilmore had to appreciate it.

    Blessings,
    Richard

  114. Guy Murphy says:

I’m sure you were a great comfort to him in his final days. I nursed a dog with snake bite once, good to know you did the best you could for him …

  115. David Sheeks says:

Sorry to hear that, I know that can be hard on the whole family. When I read “Dog Days” the other day recalling the pet psychic story made me laugh again. I’m sure you and the family will have lots of memories to do the same.

  116. jan says:

glad you could stay with him

  117. Stas says:

Another long time reader here, wanted to say that only people who had dogs can understand the height of the loss. My biggest condolecences for your loss, and may your other dog carry you through these difficult times.

  118. Freeman says:

I’d like to add my condolences. I’ve lost two of my four dogs (all over ten years old) this month myself, so I know what you’re going through.

  119. Ged Carroll says:

Sorry to hear it, it sucks, but then that’s because Chez Cringely cares and provided him with a good home. When the pain of the loss is less acute, why not give another dog the chance of a great home?

  120. mike says:

It’s so hard. Bless your family for loving him so much. I look at his soulful face and know that he felt your love until the last moment. When we are so involved in the care of our fellow mammals at the end, we learn much that is inexpressible. You’ve done a magnificently humane thing.

  121. Ryan says:

    RIP Gilmore

  122. Rick Hunter says:

I hope you have saved some of his DNA for you might decide to clone him someday. Then you can call the little guy Happy… ;)

    So long Gilmore…

  123. Aaron says:

I’m sorry to hear that. I lost a loved one recently myself.

Knowing it was probably coming just changed how my grief was expressed compared to past losses I had. I’m glad you and your family had the time to be with him and show him your love.

  124. swschrad says:

you and your family have my sympathy.

  125. Sorry, man. You gave him a good life.

  126. James says:

Remember the good times, the unconditional love, and the rest slowly fades. It’s hard, but unfortunately that’s how life works. Thinking about you and yours.

  127. Barb Miles says:

Bob – My heart aches for you and the family. We lost our Scottie in August, and we know how much you miss your Gilmore Buddy. I have to believe they are waiting for us at the end of the rainbow bridge – take care. Barb

  128. John says:

My deepest condolences. I personally find that it’s harder losing a pet than losing people.

    • Paul Allen says:

i have never had pets, so i guess i don’t understand, but how is this possible?

      • Robert Young says:

The wife is wired that way, too. Doesn’t give a crap about me, but any of her animals gets a hangnail, and all hell breaks loose.

From what I can tell it amounts to this: people last longer, animals are acquired on purpose, animals (the tame ones, anyway) don’t argue, and so on.

  129. Todd Strobl says:

Sorry to hear this. I have a lost a couple in the past few years and it is tough. Your family is in our thoughts.

  130. So sorry to hear Gilmore has passed away. I’ve left the vet crying hard even when I’ve known it was time. It hurts, but we are lucky when we are able to do our best to give a dog a good life all the way through.

  131. Steve says:

Really sorry about the loss of Gilmore. Some people remember their lives in stages, pre/post college, marriage, kids etc. For me it’s always the dogs I had at the time. You don’t fully realize it til they’re gone but those critters really tether you to the best of yourself. Hard to be an ass around a good dog.

Sorry about that parting, and best wishes to the whole family

  132. It never ceases to amaze me how much people care for animals and so little for each other.

  133. Stephen Johnson says:

    He’ll be waiting…

    http://rainbowsbridge.com/poem.htm

  134. Clay Bergen says:

    Dear Cringely family,
Our sincerest condolences to you as you mourn the loss of Gilmore. Our dogs, Oscar and Coconut, said they felt a profound sadness at the news of Gilmore’s passing. Sort of like Star Wars when Princess Leia’s home world winks out of existence. Our other two Boston Terriers will be waiting for Gilmore at the Rainbow Bridge and will welcome him home.

Thanks Mr. Cringely for writing your wonderful words all these years. I have never appreciated any of your words more than your kind words about your dog.

Take care and keep carrying on, for I am sure that is what Gilmore would have wanted. They always want the very best for us, even when we are busy trying to do the very best for us. Know that you gave him a very good life and in the end, the very greatest kindness.

    Clay, Maggie, Oscar and Coconut.

  135. Bojoe says:

    Condolences…..I’m with you.

  136. Sandy says:

Bob, I know you won’t be reading any of these posts yet… You need to take the time to heal with your family. I propose a week of silence in honor of Gilmore… No stories from you, Bob and no posts from us. …to Gilmore!!!

  137. Bruce Yelen says:

My condolences. The sad thing about having pets is that we’re destined to lose them, but our lives would be so much poorer without them! Here’s to Gilmore!!!!

  138. Bill Buhler says:

My condolances Bob, my own beloved labrador died of Lymphoma three weeks ago, while I’ll never understand the specifics, I can relate somewhat. All the best to you and your family.

  139. Anita Martino says:

Robert, i was just sent your post about Gilmore from a friend. i cannot tell you the joy i received to think we can reach our pets, and had a great laugh over “oh that”. what can i say, from a devout dog lover, my thoughts are with you today.

  140. Chicken says:

My condolences to you and your family. We recently lost a much-beloved kitty to old age and can feel your pain.

Now, at the risk of being heartless, I think this episode, which plays out every day for humans and animals, needs to be examined. What was gained from sleepless nights, vet and drug bills, drawn-out anxiety and a miserable end-of-life?

Meanwhile, perfectly healthy young animals are being euthanized daily.

Personally, I think an earlier death with dignity is better for both the living and the dead. When 50% of your LIFETIME medical costs are typically incurred in the six months before you die, some thinking is in order.

I’ve had my own brush with death (brain tumor) and given this issue a lot of thought. So I look forward to reading your reflections in your always though-provoking blog.

  141. So sorry for your loss, Bob. It’s so hard to lose them, but so rewarding to love them, as I’m sure you’ve found. My wife always says that grief is the price we pay for the gift of love. It’s always hard, but always worth it. God bless you for being such a caring ‘dad’ to Gilmore. May you be reunited someday on the bridge.

  142. Dan Katz says:

Bob, our hearts go out to you and your family, and of course to Roscoe too. I wish I had some wisdom to lessen the pain… I’m sure that Gilmore is telling all of his new friends at the Rainbow Bridge about his wonderful family and how lucky he was to have all of you. May peace be with you.

  143. Dan Cormack says:

    Hi Bob,

I am very sorry for your loss. You and your family brought unimaginable joy to his life and he to you and your family. I know you’ll cherish those days. Although it’s of little help, you at least had some warning that this may happen and could spend some quality time together, if only just looking at dogs on YouTube or drinking that dirty water from the lake..

  144. MrMarkAZ says:

    Hi,

New reader, still going through all the postings. Saw the picture of Gilmore and knew immediately what had happened and how much the loss means to you (I’ve helped my family adopt, care for, and ultimately euthanize several rescued goldens). I Wanted to extend condolences on the loss of Gilmore, who had a much better life in your home than he could have ever imagined.

  145. David Yedwab says:

    Bob,
My truest condolences to you and your family on the loss of Gilmore … as has been expressed much above, only true dog lovers know how you feel. As we say about Irish Setters — “may the shamrocks fall softly/”

  146. Bill Kunz says:

    So sorry for your loss.
    Regards
    Bill

  147. Richard Booy says:

I would like to offer my condolences. They’re all member of the family – stay strong and keep the good memories in memoriam.
    Richard

  148. Deb H says:

Bobby: I know how hard this is. So sorry to hear about your dog. May the good memories of him and the knowledge that you provided him a good, loving home help you all through this.

  149. Mike says:

    I am so sorry.

Losing a beloved dog is always painful.

Please try to remember that Gilmore was a happy creature, full of joy.

When dogs can no longer be happy and joyful, it is time for us to make the decision that is best for them.

Again, my condolences on your loss.

We have all been there, Bob, and it does hurt, and is
hard to explain to young children. Thanks for your fine column
which I have enjoyed for many years. Wishing you all the best.

  153. Steve Smith says:

I’m sorry for the loss of your family’s companion. I lost 2 in the last year and it about killed me (Bo, 13, and Lady approx. 14)

We cannot allow a lifetime of happiness to be overshadowed by our loss. But as my grandmother put it, “the true cost of ownership is only known the day we lose them.”

The following two things sums up the unique bond between man and dog for me… and let me know the loss I was feeling had been felt many times before.

    - Steve

“This soldier, I realized, must have had friends at home and in his regiment; yet he lay there deserted by all except his dog. I looked on, unmoved, at battles which decided the future of nations. Tearless, I had given orders which brought death to thousands. Yet here I was stirred, profoundly stirred, stirred to tears. And by what? By the grief of one dog.”

-Napoleon Bonaparte, on finding a dog beside the body of his dead master, licking his face and howling, on a moonlit field after a battle. Napoleon was haunted by this scene until his own death.

    “Near this Spot
are deposited the Remains of one
    who possessed Beauty without Vanity,
    Strength without Insolence,
    Courage without Ferosity,
and all the virtues of Man without his Vices.

This praise, which would be unmeaning Flattery
    if inscribed over human Ashes,
is but a just Tribute to the Memory of
    BOATSWAIN, a DOG.
Who was born in Newfoundland May 1803
and died at Newstead Nov. 18th 1808.”

    - Found on the monument for Lord Byron’s dog, Boatswain, on the grounds of Byron’s seat in Nottinghamshire, Newstead Abbey.

  154. Mike says:

Bob, sorry for your loss of a family member.

Friends are hard to lose, I still think of many (with fond memories). Last night I was talking about chasing squirrels and how this job seems to get passed down from old dog to new. Canuck got tired of Maggie nipping at her ears and told Maggie go in the back yard and chase my squirrels, so she did. Once Canuck was sure that Maggie knew how to chase squirrels, Canuck passed on. (Funny, she never pass chase ball down.) Maggie, told Sarah to quite nipping at my ears. Go in the back yard and chase squirrels. Once Sarah had this down pat, Maggie passed on. I am afraid that Bo, is no longer nipping at Sarah’s ears and has gotten pretty good at chasing squirrels. (Sarah makes sure that Bo knows that I am Sarah’s). Life goes on and you remember your best friends for what you gave them and what they gave you. There is always a tear and a smile with the memory.

  155. Matt says:

I was touched by your column and as someone who has lost a large number of beloved pets, you have my deepest sympathy. I’m so sorry for your loss.

  156. Matt says:

Deepest sympathy: 14 years ago I had to put my 16 year old Lab ‘Carly’ to sleep: I still grieve to this day………. but we had 16 years of hunting, walking and fun……Your column touches all animal lovers, thank you

  157. I’m extremely sorry for your loss. I’ve been a fan and follower of yours for years.

  158. Jason says:

  161. Dan says:

    :’( – I feel your pain.

To me, loosing a pet is more difficult than loosing a family member. As a aspy geek I don’t interact very well with people but I loved my last dog. As I’ve gotten older I’ve developed some nasty allergies to dogs, which sux, and my kids have some as well so we don’t have any pets that shed.

    Sincerely sorry for your loss,

    Dan

The following link is for the video which won the 2010 Vimeo Awards, “Last Minutes with ODEN”. Chosen as Best Video, as well as Best Documentary and Community Choice, this video documents Jason Wood’s last few minutes with his cancer-stricken dog Oden.

(I don’t think we realize how much we are emotionally invested in our pets, until we lose one, especially like this. The power of this video lies not with the physical loss of the dog, but in how the owner’s emotions reflect that loss. I’ve been through this process a few times, and hope I never have to go through it again.)

PLEASE NOTE: This short (6 minutes, 15 seconds) video contains some strong language, and may not be suitable for viewing in a work environment. The video is emotionally intense, but extremely powerful, well-crafted and beautiful (IMHO).
